OUR METHODOLOGY

How we choose
where to eat.

Budapest Food Atlas is a curated guide, not a complete directory and not a popularity ranking. We aim to surface places that are genuinely useful to visitors and worth knowing about.

01

Quality comes first

We look at food and drink quality, consistency, execution, service, atmosphere and overall experience.

A high rating alone is not enough. We are more interested in whether a place consistently delivers what it promises.

02

We look beyond ratings

Public reviews are useful, but they can be noisy, outdated or heavily influenced by tourist traffic.

We look at review patterns, local reputation, editorial mentions, category relevance and whether the experience feels authentic rather than engineered for passing visitors.

03

Category relevance matters

A restaurant may be excellent overall but still not belong in every list.

Each place is included only where we believe it is genuinely relevant to that category — whether that is pizza, brunch, specialty coffee, Hungarian food, wine bars or another part of the guide.

04

Value is part of the experience

Value does not mean cheap. It means the overall experience makes sense for what the guest is paying.

We consider quality, portion, service, setting and price together rather than judging price in isolation.

05

We try to avoid tourist traps

Central location is not a negative by itself, but places that rely mainly on foot traffic, inflated pricing or weak consistency are less likely to make the guide.

We prefer places we would feel comfortable recommending to a friend visiting Budapest.

06

Lists are reviewed every month

Our recommendations are reviewed and updated every month to keep the guide current and reliable.

New places can be added, closed places removed, and existing recommendations can move between categories or leave the guide if the experience changes.

07

Independent selection

Budapest Food Atlas is not a paid ranking.

Restaurants cannot buy a position in the guide, and commercial relationships do not determine inclusion.

08

How AI is used

Budapest Food Atlas was built with the help of AI.

AI is used for research assistance, data processing, technical development and editorial support. Selection criteria and editorial decisions are human-reviewed.
